A BRIEF HISTORY OF
CLARENCE GARDENS
BOWLING CLUB

Club season opening circa late 60's early 70's

In the charming suburb of Clarence Gardens, a pivotal moment in community recreation unfolded on August 31, 1949. At the behest of local residents, a meeting was convened to establish a bowling club amidst the picturesque environs of AA Bailey Reserve. The seeds of camaraderie planted on that day would blossom into the Clarence Gardens Bowling Club.

Formalising their commitment, another gathering took place on February 28, 1951, where a committee was inaugurated to shape the destiny of the budding club. This date now stands as the official founding of the Clarence Gardens Bowling Club. Before the construction of dedicated club rooms, the Cumberland Soccer Club served as the initial communal hub.

June 5, 1955, marked a significant milestone when the foundation stone for the Club was ceremoniously laid. Over the years, the Club witnessed a number of expansions, with the most notable being in 1979 when the lounge was extended and named the McNamara Lounge in honour of Perc McNamara, an esteemed President who met his untimely demise in office.

Fuelling its growth, the Club wisely allocated funds to its development, exemplified by the installation of solar panels in 2011. The commitment to excellence extended to the bowling greens, which have undergone periodic progression. The Club currently boasts two tifdwarf (a couch grass variety) greens and one Tiger Turf artificial green (enabling year-round play).

As the story of the Clarence Gardens Bowling Club continues to unfold, it remains a testament to the enduring spirit of community and comradeship, with an on-going love of the sport, that is lawn bowls.
